How to Build a Habit by Text Message

Updated: 1 day ago
Most habit apps have the same flaw: you have to remember to open them. The app is supposed to help you remember the habit, but nothing helps you remember the app. Within a few weeks the icon sits unopened, and the habit goes with it.
A text message does not have that problem. It arrives whether or not you remembered, on the one device you already check all day, and replying takes a single word.
Pick one habit, not five
The research on habit formation is consistent on one point: people who try to start several habits at once rarely keep any of them. Choose the one habit that would make the biggest difference if you did it every day for a month. "Walk 20 minutes", "no phone in bed", "write 200 words". Keep it small enough that a bad day can't stop you.
Make the check-in automatic
The check-in has to come to you. Set a daily reminder at the time you are most likely to have already done the habit, usually the evening. If the reminder arrives and you have not done it yet, you still have time. If you have, replying "done" takes two seconds and the streak grows.
With Habit Textapp this is the whole setup: text the number with your habit, pick a time, and answer yes or no each day.
Track the streak, but forgive the skip
Streaks motivate until they break, and then they demotivate. The trick is to log skips honestly and keep going. A seven-day view that shows six dots and one gap is far more useful than a counter that reset to zero. Look for a tracker that treats a skipped day as information, not failure.
Add a buddy
This is the step most people skip, and it is the one that matters most. In accountability studies, people who told a friend their goal and reported progress to them completed it at roughly double the rate of people who kept it to themselves.
It does not need to be a coach or a group. One friend who sees whether you checked in today is enough. In Habit Textapp, ask for an invite code, send it to a friend, and from then on each of you sees whether the other followed through.
A simple plan for the first 30 days
Choose one habit and write it as a short action.
Set the daily check-in for the time you are most likely to have finished it.
Reply every day, yes or no, without exception.
Invite one person by the end of week one.
At day 30, look at the pattern. Keep the habit, or swap it for the next one.
